🎧 Listening & Pronunciation — Good pronunciation is essential for clear communication in Portuguese. This lesson covers the most important sounds in Portuguese, including nasal vowels (ã, õ, em, an, etc.), the two R sounds (soft tap and guttural), LH and NH sounds, and more. Listen carefully to each sound and practice repeating the words and sentences.

🔊 Click the Listen button next to each word or sound to hear the pronunciation using Text-to-Speech.

💡 Tip: Repeat each word out loud at least 3 times. Record yourself and compare with the audio.

👃 Nasal Vowels

Nasal vowels are one of the most distinctive features of Portuguese. They are pronounced through the nose. The tilde (~) or an "m" or "n" after a vowel indicates nasality.

💡 Tip: To practice nasal vowels, try to say the vowel while blocking the air from leaving your mouth so it comes out through your nose. Cover your nose while practicing to test the difference!
/ã/
mãe, pão, irmã
Nasal A — through the nose
ناک سے آ
/ẽ/
bem, tempo, também
Nasal E — through the nose
ناک سے ای
/ĩ/
sim, fim, assim
Nasal I — through the nose
ناک سے ای
/õ/
bom, som, avô
Nasal O — through the nose
ناک سے او
/ũ/
um, algum, nenhum
Nasal U — through the nose
ناک سے او

📌 Nasal Vowels Rule:

• When a vowel has a tilde (~) or is followed by m or n at the end of a syllable, it becomes nasal.

• The m or n is not pronounced separately — the vowel is pronounced through the nose.

• Examples: mãe (mother), pão (bread), bem (well), bom (good), um (one)

🗣️ The Two "R" Sounds

Portuguese has two distinct "R" sounds: the soft R (tap) and the strong R (guttural). The difference can change the meaning of words.

💡 Tip: For the soft R, tap your tongue once against the roof of your mouth (like the "dd" in "ladder"). For the strong R, make a guttural sound from your throat (like the French R).
# Sound Word Pronunciation (English) تلفظ (Urdu) Meaning معنی (Urdu) Audio
1Soft R (tap)caroka-ro (tap)کارو (نرم)expensiveمہنگا
2Strong R (guttural)carroka-ho (guttural)کارو (سخت)carگاڑی
3Soft R (tap)parapa-ra (tap)پارا (نرم)to/forکو / لیے
4Strong R (guttural)ratoha-to (guttural)راتو (سخت)mouseچوہا
5Soft R (tap)horao-ra (tap)اورا (نرم)hourگھنٹہ
6Strong R (guttural)Riohee-o (guttural)ریو (سخت)Rio (city)ریو

📌 R Rules:

• Soft R — between vowels and at the end of words (caro, para).

• Strong R — at the beginning of words, after consonants, and double RR (rato, carro).

🗣️ LH and NH Sounds

These are unique Portuguese sounds that do not exist in English.

💡 Tip: LH is like the "lli" in "million" (e.g., filho). NH is like the "ny" in "canyon" (e.g., manhã). Practice these sounds slowly.
/ʎ/
filho, mulher, olho
LH — like "lli" in "million"
لھ — جیسے "ملین" میں
/ɲ/
manhã, sonho, vinho
NH — like "ny" in "canyon"
نھ — جیسے "کینین" میں

🗣️ S and Z Sounds

The letter "S" can be pronounced as /s/ or /z/ depending on its position. The letter "Z" is always /z/.

/s/
sapo, sol, casa
S (voiceless) — at beginning of words or after consonants
بے آواز ایس
/z/
casa, mesa, rosa
S (voiced) — between vowels
وائسڈ ایس
/z/

Z — always /z/ like in "zoo"
زی کی آواز

📌 S Rule:

• S at the beginning of words = /s/ (sapo).

• S between vowels = /z/ (casa).

• S after consonants = /s/ (falso).

🔍 Minimal Pairs

Minimal pairs are words that differ by only one sound. Practicing them helps train your ear to distinguish similar sounds.

💡 Tip: Listen carefully to each pair and try to hear the difference. Repeat each word out loud. Pay attention to nasal vs non-nasal sounds!

🎵 Sentence Stress and Intonation

Portuguese sentence stress falls on the stressed syllable of the most important word (usually the last content word). Questions often have rising intonation at the end.
