📐 Word Order & Sentence Structure — German word order is flexible but follows specific rules. The most important rule is the verb-second (V2) rule: in main clauses, the finite verb is always in the second position. In subordinate clauses, the verb goes to the end. Understanding these rules is essential for forming correct German sentences.

💡 Key Rule: Verb in second position in main clauses; Verb at the end in subordinate clauses. Subject usually first, but other elements can be moved to position 1 for emphasis.

📌 Main Clauses — The Verb-Second (V2) Rule

In main clauses, the conjugated verb is always in the second position. The first position can be the subject or another element (for emphasis).

# Position 1 Position 2 (Verb) Rest of Sentence Translation ترجمہ (Urdu) Audio
1 Ich komme aus Berlin. I come from Berlin. میں برلن سے آتا ہوں۔
2 Heute gehe ich ins Kino. Today I am going to the cinema. آج میں سنیما جا رہا ہوں۔
3 Morgen fährt mein Bruder nach München. Tomorrow my brother is driving to Munich. کل میرا بھائی میونخ جا رہا ہے۔
4 Im Sommer machen wir Urlaub in Spanien. In summer we vacation in Spain. موسم گرما میں ہم سپین میں چھٹیاں گزارتے ہیں۔
5 Das Buch lese ich gerne. The book I like to read. کتاب مجھے پڑھنا پسند ہے۔

📌 V2 Rule Summary:

• The verb is always in position 2 in main clauses.

• Position 1 can be the subject or any other element (time, object, etc.) for emphasis.

• The subject usually follows the verb if it's not in position 1.

📌 Subordinate Clauses — Verb at the End

In subordinate clauses (introduced by conjunctions like dass, weil, wenn, ob, etc.), the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause.

# Conjunction Subordinate Clause Verb at End Translation ترجمہ (Urdu) Audio
1 dass ..., dass ich heute komme. komme ..., that I am coming today. ... کہ میں آج آ رہا ہوں۔
2 weil ..., weil ich müde bin. bin ..., because I am tired. ... کیونکہ میں تھکا ہوا ہوں۔
3 wenn ..., wenn ich Zeit habe. habe ..., when I have time. ... جب میرے پاس وقت ہو۔
4 ob ..., ob er heute kommt. kommt ..., whether he is coming today. ... کہ آیا وہ آج آ رہا ہے۔
5 da ..., da ich kein Geld habe. habe ..., since I have no money. ... کیونکہ میرے پاس پیسے نہیں ہیں۔

📌 Subordinate Clause Summary:

• Subordinate clauses are introduced by conjunctions: dass, weil, wenn, ob, da, während, nachdem, etc.

• The conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause.

• The main clause and subordinate clause are separated by a comma.

📌 Main Clause + Subordinate Clause

Complete sentences with both a main clause (V2) and a subordinate clause (verb at the end).

# Main Clause Subordinate Clause Translation ترجمہ (Urdu) Audio
1 Ich gehe nach Hause, weil ich müde bin. I am going home because I am tired. میں گھر جا رہا ہوں کیونکہ میں تھکا ہوا ہوں۔
2 Er sagte, dass er morgen kommt. He said that he is coming tomorrow. اس نے کہا کہ وہ کل آ رہا ہے۔
3 Wir bleiben zu Hause, weil es regnet. We are staying home because it is raining. ہم گھر پر رہ رہے ہیں کیونکہ بارش ہو رہی ہے۔
4 Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt. I don't know whether he is coming today. میں نہیں جانتا کہ آیا وہ آج آ رہا ہے۔
5 Wenn ich Zeit habe, besuche ich dich. When I have time, I will visit you. جب میرے پاس وقت ہوگا، میں تم سے ملوں گا۔

📌 Key Observation:

• In sentence 5, the subordinate clause comes first (position 1), so the verb of the main clause is still in position 2 (besuche).

• The verb in the subordinate clause is at the end (habe).

⏰ Time — Manner — Place (TMP)

In German, the standard order of adverbials is Time → Manner → Place (TMP). This helps create clear and natural sentences.

# Subject Verb Time (Wann?) Manner (Wie?) Place (Wo?/Wohin?) Translation ترجمہ (Urdu) Audio
1 Ich gehe heute schnell nach Hause. I am going home quickly today. میں آج جلدی گھر جا رہا ہوں۔
2 Wir fahren morgen mit dem Zug nach Berlin. We are going to Berlin by train tomorrow. ہم کل ٹرین سے برلن جا رہے ہیں۔
3 Er arbeitet jeden Tag konzentriert im Büro. He works concentratedly in the office every day. وہ ہر روز دفتر میں توجہ سے کام کرتا ہے۔
4 Sie isst oft gerne im Restaurant. She often likes to eat in the restaurant. وہ اکثر ریستوران میں کھانا پسند کرتی ہے۔
5 Mein Vater liest abends laut im Wohnzimmer. My father reads aloud in the living room in the evenings. میرے والد شام کو لاؤڈ روم میں بلند آواز سے پڑھتے ہیں۔

📌 TMP Rule:

Time → Manner → Place

• This is the neutral word order. Deviations are possible for emphasis.

Time answers: Wann? (When?)

Manner answers: Wie? (How?)

Place answers: Wo? / Wohin? (Where? / Where to?)

📖 Important Rules

Rule: In main clauses, the conjugated verb is always in the second position.

• Position 1 can be the subject or another element.
• The verb is always in position 2, regardless of what is in position 1.
اصلی جملے میں فعل ہمیشہ دوسرے نمبر پر آتا ہے۔
📌 Subordinate Clause (Verb at End)

Rule: In subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb goes to the end.

• Introduced by conjunctions: dass, weil, wenn, ob, etc.

• Time: Wann? (When?)
• Manner: Wie? (How?)
• Place: Wo? / Wohin? (Where? / Where to?)
وقت → طریقہ → جگہ
🔄 Inversion (Subject-Verb)
Heute gehe ich.
Rule: When position 1 is not the subject, the subject moves to position 3 (after the verb).

• Normal: Ich gehe heute.
• Inverted: Heute gehe ich.
جب پہلے نمبر پر subject نہ ہو تو subject فعل کے بعد آتا ہے۔

📖 Tips for Learning Word Order

• Manner: schnell, langsam, gerne
• Place: in Berlin, nach Hause
وقت → طریقہ → جگہ — اس ترتیب کو یاد رکھیں۔
